Friday the 13th Haul Feat. Neca, Mezco, & Funko
Three New ‘Jason Voorhees’ Figures for the Collection!
Jason Voorhees is a huge favorite in the Tobin household, with Jason and Adrianna ganging up on me to push him past Freddy Krueger at the top of the list (philistines).
It should be unsurprising, therefore, that we have a rather large Jason Voorhees collection that is regularly added to.
Jason (the collector, not the character) recently unboxed three new figures of Jason (the character, not the collector), with pieces from Neca, Funko, and Mezco. All three are awesome in their own ways, so let’s take a look at them now!
Few companies capture the movie-realistic wonder of the classic silent slasher like NECA Toys. Their ‘Ultimate’ series are some of the best Jason Voorhees figures out there. They’ve made movie-realization versions of Jason from across the franchise, with our most recent pick-up being the “Freddy VS Jason” option. FVJ is an amazing(ly awful) movie that is tons of fun to watch, and it boasts a totally badass look for Jason, so of course NECA had to do this. They had to.

One of my favorite things about this particular Jason Voorhees figure is the fact that he comes with so many different display opportunities for his ‘face’. For a character who spends the overwhelming majority of his screen time in the same mask, that might be a bit of a surprise. But NECA managed it by making multiple masks from different scenes throughout “Freddy VS Jason”.
First, shown above, is the straightforward iconic hockey mask. It’s a given, of course, but it’s also beautifully painted with a kind of grimy, dirty look to it that works so well.
Second, shown below, features the mask absolutely drenched in blood, so much so that you can’t even see any of the chevrons. This one is a sweet display option if you want to make your figure look extra menacing!
Third, and possibly my favorite, is the slashed mask, shown below. This one is darker and dirtier, and features a ton of slash marks courtesy of Freddy’s claws. This is “been through the ringer at this point” Jason.
And finally, if you want to remove the masks all together, you get a look at this disgusting blighter (below). Not all toy companies bother to actually sculpt the face beneath the mask, but NECA takes joy in it. Look at that monster! His skin is dead-looking, his mouth and teeth are nasty, and he’s got that one lazy eye going on. I personally prefer Jason Voorhees with his mask on, but it’s always awesome to have options.
The “Freddy VS Jason” version of Jason Voorhees has definitely seen better days, hasn’t he? NECA worked plenty of details into this Ultimate figure in response. This Jason looks like he just crawled out of the grave for sure. The shirt in particular is riddle with rips, tears, holes, dirt, grime, and groadiness.
This is one aspect on which Jason (the collector, not the character) disagree, but I personally love the platform shoes too. There’s just something inherently hysterical about a serial slasher wearing four-inch-heeled boots.
Of course these figures always come with accessories as well. In the case of this particular one, most of the accessories are in the form of the three separate mask options. But he also comes with his iconic machete, and a particularly amusing item: his teddy bear! Come on, doesn’t that just make for the absolute best pose ever?
Call me crazy (most people do!) but I love cute-ified versions of horror icons. There’s just something about an adorable version of someone who is supposed to be terrifying. Funko’s 5-Star figure definitely falls into that category.
This simple vinyl figure is molded in a ‘chibi’ style with a big head and big eyes, and just look at him! He’s so bloody cute!
Being such a simple figure there isn’t a lot of detail, but Funko did do a good job on several aspects. One is, of course, the hockey mask. Another is that they got his lazy eye right, something that is extremely annoying when done wrong (or not done at all). Finally, he comes with an ax and a bloodied machete to pose with as you like. All in all, a cute, affordable figure of a prolific serial killer. Totally innocent!
From one big-headed figure to another but this one is much different in aesthetic. This stylized version of Jason Voorhees by Mezco Toyz has a bit of an uncanny look to him, to tell the truth! He’s got a hyper-stylized design, featuring big hands and feet on a fairly standard body and a huge head. The uncanny part? Those eyes! Look at that pic above! Those eyes are the thing of nightmares.
There are tons of little details in the folds of the clothes, the design of the shoes, and the wrinkles in his skin. The hands in particular are quite well done with the knuckles and fingernails. They’re extremely well-molded. Hands are always difficult with any kind of art, so I’m personally rather impressed by the excellent shaping of the fingers.
That is truly a face that only a mother could love! (And she did…that’s what started the whole mess, after all!) Mezco did a great job portraying the absolutely terrifying face beneath the mask we all know and love. His face is twisted, his nose squashed, his teeth rotten, his eyes absolutely horrid. Yes, again, I bring you back to the eyes. They’re glassy and realistic and gross.
Personally though, as mentioned previously, I prefer our serial killer with his mask on. Especially since the mask itself is covered in all kinds of hacks and slashes on this figure. When those eyes are behind it it’s just perfect, don’t you think? Add in the choice between a bloody machete and a bloody mask and you’ve got one hell of a sweet figure from Mezco.
There is definitely no lack of Jason Voorhees collectibles out there for the discerning horror geek. These are just three of a world of options…but they’re three awesome options, right? Right!
