Unboxing Series 3 of Cryptozoic’s DC Bombshells – Plus Lil’ Bombshells Backpack Clips!
DC Bombshells is an amazing concept wherein the lovely ladies of the DC Comics Universe are designed in the style of old-school “bombshell” pin-up girls. More than one toy company has run with this concept, but Cryptozoic is likely my favorite. Their designs have a fun mixture of sexy and cutesy, while holding tight to the key character traits and personalities of the characters.
We’ve shown off some of Cryptozoic’s DC Bombshells statues in the past. Today we’re overjoyed to be showing off some more of them! Cryptozoic sent us their three Series 3 full-sized DC Bombshells, as well as a set of their Lil’ Bombshells Backpack Clips!
DC Lil’ Bombshells Backpack Clips Blind Bags
Cryptozoic is no stranger to blind bag products. Their Lil’ Bombshells line features small versions of their DC Bombshells designs as a slightly more “cutie-fied” option that comes in a sealed tin. Their new Lil’ Bombshells backpack clips are continuation of that idea. They are, basically, the same designs as the Lil’ Bombshells, but about 2/3rds the size, and come attached to small chains which can then be attached to your backpack, purse, or wherever else you wish! For the first line of this series Cryptozoic has chosen to feature Black Canary, Poison Ivy, Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn, Catwoman, and Batwoman. They’re an adorable idea for a blind bag product for the collector who wants to carry a DC Bombshell lady with them wherever they go.
But keep your eye out! There are also two chase variants in this line! If you’re lucky you might pull a “Noir” version of Wonder Woman or Harley Quinn. These chases feature the ladies painted all in black and white, with red-and-blue highlights.
DC Bombshells Series 3: Harley Quinn
Harley Quinn featured in Cryptozoic’s DC Bombshells line previously. She’s even been treated with the variant brush, boasting versions in “Noir”, black-and-white, golden, Christmas colors, and more. For Series 3, Cryptozoic decided to give her a redesign.
She’s still dressed in her aviation gear from her gorgeous pin-up style, but with a few twists. Her original figure featured her standing straight on, one hand on her hip, the other holding up a pop-gun (or is it meant to be a flare gun?), with a sly smirk on her lips. The new design has her standing a little sideways, with one hand leaning against her enormous mallet, and the other flashing a peace sign. To top it off, she’s added a winking eye to the smirk, and she’s looking a little up. She almost looks like she’s waving at the plane that just flew off after she smashed one of it’s engines with her mallet.
Am I reading too much into her pose? Maybe. But you guys know I love Harley, and it’s fun to imagine her pose has a story behind it!
She is, of course, standing on the same missile-style bomb cut-out as the original designs, as well. She’s flirty, fun, and adorable. It would have been great to see a DC lady that hasn’t yet been used join the DC Bombshells line, but I can’t say I’m disappointed in this new design for Harley.
DC Bombshells Series 3: Mera
Mera is an addition to the line that has taken me completely by surprise. I know very little about the character, but I love this statue! The queen of the sea, logically, is done in a nautical theme.
Her adorable outfit looks like a particularly chic naval uniform, accented with green scales that remind you of a mermaid’s tail. Complete with gold bands on her wrists and an adorable little hat with an “M” on it, she definitely looks ready to sail.
The pose is what really makes this statue for me, though! She’s gazing off to the distance, hand up in a salute, while gripping a beautiful golden trident in the other hand.
There’s a little curl in her lip and a puff of orange hair is fluffed over her shoulder… I’m hooked! She’s bloody adorable! She could easily be saluting the troops, or getting ready to head off on her own naval adventure. Whichever it is, she’s definitely happy about it.
DC Bombshells Series 3 – Black Canary
As big a fan as I am of Harley Quinn, and as in love as I am with the design of Mera’s statue, neither is my favorite in the series. They both pale in comparison to Black Canary. In fact, the saucy songstress may actually be the best design in the DC Bombshells line yet!
Everything about Black Canary’s design shrieks “sultry lounge singer”. She’s got a sexy short skirt with a slit showing off the top of her fishnet stockings. She’s got a puffy-armed button-up blouse revealing the top of her bra. She has short black gloves, a flower in her hair, and a mole above her pouty lips. And, of course, she’s holding an old-school classic standing microphone, ready to croon away.
I am beyond in love with the design for Black Canary’s statue! Her pose is adorable. It gives the impression that she’s in mid-song, shooting a glance up at someone in the balcony as she sings. Her outfit and hair are super-stylish for the age being expressed. And her personality really comes through; she’s sexy and she knows it, but she’s also trying to be coy and cute.
Some of my favorite things about the statue though? Some of the fun little details, like the tattoo on her forearm. It’s a classic heart-through-arrow design, but it’s a green arrow, with “Oliver” written on the ribbon across the heart. How cute is that?
Sexy Statue Stockings
And of course there’s the fishnet stockings which, in my opinion, really brings the whole figure together. Cryptozoic originally tried putting actual netting on the figure to create the look, but it wouldn’t work for production reasons. Instead they carved the shape of the stockings in the figure, covered it in a black-wash, and wiped off the excess. The result works great, and maybe even better than if they’d used real “stockings”. Carving the lines in her legs gives that impression that they’re just a tiny bit too tight, biting into her skin for the sake of beauty.
Again, I might be looking too deep into it, but the end result is that this statue is awesome.
DC Bombshells Series 3 – Lovely Ladies of DC Comics
These three ladies make for gorgeous additions to Cryptozoic’s take on the DC Bombshells design. If you’re a fan of any of these characters, you really can’t pass them up. They’re beautiful, well-made, and totally affordable. And they look great on a shelf, especially together as a group! Check them out for yourself, and don’t forget about our review of the original Series 1 statues!
