Super Gross & Awesome Horror & Sci-Fi Madballs: Series 1 from NECA & Kidrobot! Foam, Freaky & Fun!
Madballs Horror: Foam, Freaky & Fun!
Foam, Freaky & Fun, It’s Madballs! We’ve got the entire series 1 of these super gross horror & sci-fi monstrosities. NECA and Kidrobot definitely set their ugly meters on high and we love it! They certainly bring back the gross out factor of the toys we all loved in the 90s.
For the horror characters we’ve got Freddy Krueger from A Nightmare on Elm Street, Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th, and Leatherface from Texas Chainsaw Massacre. On the sci-fi side we have a Xenomorph and Facehugger from Alien, and the Predator! We love ALL those franchises!
Tracey picked these up these for me for Christmas when they were still exclusive to Best Buy, but now they’ve had a widespread release for all retailers! Grab some yourself at Entertainment Earth!
If the video didn’t have enough “balls” related jokes in it for you well it’s again time to show you my balls!
OH THE HORROR!
Horror Madballs Series 1 Freddy Krueger
First one we’re looking at is Freddy Krueger, Tracey’s favorite 80s slasher. Freddy looks very intense coming at you and is packed with little details. His glove can be seen pressing into his face and poking through his hat. He has some exposed brain on one side of his head that makes me think of his scene from A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2. Yeah, Freddy was pretty creepy in his early years. He’s staring down with those Madballs style bloodshot eyes and his skin has his trademark burn scars all over. Yellow teeth for good measure. For just that bit of extra gross out feel (because of course), he has oozing green slime coming out of places. Classic Madballs!
The back side of the ball let’s us see a bit of Freddy’s trademark tattered red and green sweater. A little bit more detail can be seen on the glove as well with the screw holes and rivets. Oh and of course, more green goop to help you… Never Sleep Again!
Horror Madballs Series 1 Jason Voorhees
My favorite 80’s slasher is up next. Anyone who follows us know how big a Jason Voorhees fan I am. So I’m glad to say the Jason Mad Ball rocks! He’s definitely inspired by the undead reanimated Jason from the second half of the franchise. (Jason basically gets Frankenstein’d in part 6). There are a lot of Part 6 and Part 7 throwbacks in here.
His mask is great! He only has one red chevron on it while he normally has 3. This is because the others are covered in spots where they decided to add greatly exaggerated details. I support this choice because the details are nice and gross! There’s chips in the top where he received an axe wound. A full chunk of mask is missing at the bottom exposing his gross mouth. This is likely a shout to the end of Part 6 and Part 7’s costume design after Jason gets damaged by a running boat motor. The worm coming out of his eye is a nice, nasty touch. Feels a lot like his coming out of the grave scene in Part 6.
I can’t quite explain it but Jason’s got some Bela Lugosi style hair going on. It’s not a big deal as Madballs are highly stylized and exaggerated but I definitely think the Dracula hair is a little weird. But hey, more worms, brains and goop from his over tightened mask straps! JOY!
Horror Madballs Series 1 Leatherface
Leatherface is quite the charmer in his skin mask. Who could resist those pearly yellows? Neca and Kidrobot captured a Leatherface likeness pretty spot on in this hyper-stylized look. Not too much is overdone. He almost seems a little reserved compared to the other two Horror slashers. His hair is curly, his eyes are pretty crazy and he’s got blue stitching all around his head. Add a little bug on his forehead and yeah, there’s not as much gross to be said about…
Oh! There it is. Dang he really misplaced his mallet. The mallet slammed into the head with all that goop. That’s a crazy back view. A split open seem showing a little brain (there’s a brain theme here for the Horror guys) on a patch of head missing hair adds to the gross but I can’t get over that mallet. It’s kind of a shame for display collectors that the mallet won’t be seen on most displays since the characters would most likely be facing outward. Still love it though! It’s the little things that make the best collectibles.
Sci-Fi Gross Outs!
Horror & Sci-Fi Madballs Series 1 Alien Xenomorph
The first two MadBalls we’ll look at from the Sci-Fi line are from Alien. I love the Xenomorph in the movies. That H.R. Giger design is so perfectly creepy and menacing. I do have to say though, of the 6 Madballs, I find this is probably the weakest of the 6. That’s not to say it’s not awesome though. There’s plenty going on here with all the tubes, crevaces and stretched skin and muscles. The green slime actually makes a lot of since here since the Alien bleeds acid. The extra head tongue is painted inside the open mouth of the head with another tongue coming out of it for some reason. I dig it! These are all about being over-the-top so it’s a fun little take.
The back is mainly just bullet riddles and small slashes in the skull dome. Not much more to say here.
Horror & Sci-Fi Madballs Series 1 Alien Facehugger
The Facehugger in the Alien Madballs is where things start to get really gross. The facehugger basically lays it’s eggs in it’s host by latching on to the host’s face and planting them down the throat. It latches on using these large finger like appendages. It looks like they’ve wrapped around the Nostromo crew member’s head a little too tight since he seems to have a bit of an eye problem. No worries, we can just pop that right back in. The shape of the Facehugger is all there while still keeping a ball form and the Nostromo hat and bloodshot eyes add that extra bit of detail.
The back of the Mad Ball shows where the Facehugger has the end of his finger-like appendages grasped tightly on to the head. (Of course, resulting in more green goo). The coil of the Facehugger’s tail actually helps a ton in getting this Mad Ball to stand upright for display. Very handy if you are shelf displaying these in your collection and don’t have something like a baseball stand to assist you. There is a small button on the hat that says “Game Over!” This is an especially nice touch as it is a shout out to the famous line “Game over man, GAME OVER!” said by the late great Bill Paxton’s character Private Hudson. I really like that little addition a lot.
Horror & Sci-Fi Madballs Series 1 Predator
For the final Mad Ball we have the Predator. This one is definitely my favorite of the set. Not just because it’s my favorite movie. I am a fan of all these movies. No it’s because LOOK HOW INSANELY COOL HE LOOKS!
The Predator and the Yautja have an incredible design for movie monsters so they translated perfectly into what NECA and Kidrobot were looking to accomplish with this line. He’s SOOOOOOOOO ugly and I love it! The green goop once again works as the Predator bleeds green and of course, If it bleeds, we can kill it. The bloodshot, nervous tick eyes look even more intense with the yellow. Predator’s mandibles actually stick out from the ball and make his open mouth seem even more gross. Not to mention they kept all the little black spiky hairs that stick out from predators head. PERFECTION!
Around the back the Predator has all his “Pred-Dreads” (yeah, that’s what I call them, so what?) and they are accented with a skull at the bottom. A symbol of the Predator’s trophies. This is one seriously fun foam ball.
Gross, wacky & a whole lotta fun!
Madballs Horror & Sci-Fi Series 1
These guys a freaky, funny and a ton of fun. They make really unique additions to any horror collectors display. The vibrant colors really pop and the outlandish design of the characters are a joy to look at. I recommend these for any horror collector or collector of any of these fandoms.
I’d really like to see them continue on with a series 2. I think characters like Pinhead, Chucky and maybe an Ash Williams would be really fun to see in the horror line. I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to see a Godzilla in the sci-fi line!
That was a lot on balls!
What do you think? What characters would you like to see done in the Madballs style? Do you think Godzilla would make an awesome Madballs addition?
